Today's walk took us from Azorfa thru Santa Domingo de Calzada. It is historic site along the Camino. Saint Domingo dedicated his life to improving the route for pilgrims and built many roads and bridges along with the Cathderal and originally a pilgrims hospital which is now a luxury hotel, The Parador. We took a tour of the Cathderal- sorry no pictures-- you just can't photograph something that massive with an iPhone ! (You can google it for more info). One interesting feature is that there is a live hen and rooster in the church! Legend goes that a young man was wrongly accused and hung. When his parents went to the judge, who was just about to eat dinner, the judge said the son was just as dead as the chicken he was about to eat-- then the chicken stood up on the plate and crowed. Everyone ran out to the tree and the young man was alive. So due to this miracle, a rooster & hen live in a special coop in the church. It is said to be good luck if you hear the rooster crow -- he crowed 10 times in a row when we came up to the coop!! We will see if his good luck is true !
Today is the Feast of Corpus Christi and much celebrated in this area. On the streets, people had made designs from flowers and the street was strewn with sprigs of rosemary

When we reached our destination of Granon, we were able to join in the last couple blocks of a Eucharistic procession.
We are staying in a small albergue attached to the church. Tonight there are no beds, but mats on the floor. Hopefully I will be able to get up in the morning and not be too stiff!

Boo makes a particularly fetching "pilgrim"! I especially like how his hat brim makes it's way into the photo.
ReplyDeleteThat was an artistic choice.
